GROUND WATER
PROTECTION MISSION:
To manage and
protect the ground water resources in
Arkansas for
human, environmental, and economic benefits.
PROGRAM SUMMARY:
The Arkansas Natural Resources Commission (Commission) is the State’s water resources planning and management
agency. The Commission is responsible for state level planning, management,
and protection of our ground water resources. This is accomplished through
monitoring of the aquifers water levels and water quality, the implementation
of best management practices (BMPs), conservation, enforcement of the proper
construction of water wells, and education. These goals are accomplished
through a strong working with the public and with other agencies. The Commission’s
Ground Water Management and Protection Programs are summarized below.
IMPORTANT FACTS
AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Commission works closely with
other State and federal agencies to monitor a water well network of over
1200 sites for water level and water-quality information.
Pursuant to the Arkansas Ground Water
Protection and Management Act of 1991, the Commission produces an annual
ground water report on the condition of the State’s ground water resources,
along with recommendations on critical areas.
Coordination of the Arkansas Ground
Water Protection and Management Committee.
Implementation of Best Management
Practices (BMPs) to prevent nonpoint source pollution.
Enforcement of the Water Well Construction
Commission Rules and Regulations.
Provide technical assistance on hydrogeology
and water supply availability
